– Josef Newgarden earned his fourth podium finish of 2015 at Pocono Raceway, finishing second in today’s ABC Supply 500. Ed Carpenter was sidelined by a mechanical failure and was credited with a 17th place finishing position.

– Carpenter started the 200-lap race from the 21st position, but quickly moved into the Top 10. He remained there until he was hit from behind by James Jakes, causing the left rear bumper pod to fly off and cause a debris caution. The No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka crew quickly changed Carpenter’s rear wing, though the new one was on a different downforce setting than the old wing. Still, Carpenter persevered until Lap 156 when a mechanical failure prevented him from finishing the race.

– Newgarden let the Verizon IndyCar Series field know he was a force to be reckoned with right at the green flag, as he started fourth but went four-wide into Turn 1 on the first lap, taking the lead of the race. He led 47 laps of the ABC Supply 500 in his No. 67 Hartman Oil Chevrolet, giving him 366 laps led during the season. He was 6th at the last restart of the race on Lap 193, but powered his way up to second. He had eventual race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay in his sights when a caution came out again on Lap 197, causing the race to end under yellow.

– The ABC Supply 500 is the second race of the year that Newgarden has finished second to Hunter-Reay, mirroring the finish from the most recent oval event on the schedule at Iowa Speedway. Newgarden has claimed victories at Barber Motorsports Park and in the streets of Toronto this season.

– Six drivers remain eligible for the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series championship, including Newgarden. The season finale next weekend at Sonoma Raceway rewards double points with 104 possible. Newgarden sits in 6th place in the standings, currently 87 points behind leader Juan Pablo Montoya.

– Luca Filippi will join Newgarden at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, the road and street course driver for the No. 20. The ABC Supply 500 was the last race of the 2015 season for team co-owner Carpenter, who only races on the oval circuits.

– The championship-deciding season finale will take place next Sunday, August 30. The GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma will be held around the 2.385-mile, 12-turn natural-terrain road course of Sonoma Raceway and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network, beginning at 4 p.m. ET.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 67 HARTMAN OIL CHEVROLET: “It was a long, tough day in the car. CFH Racing did a great job working on the thing, tuning it, making it better. Happy with our result, but I’m just thinking about Justin (Wilson) right now and hoping he’s ok.”

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S VODKA CHEVROLET, FINISHED 17TH: “It was disappointing. For as many problems as we had this weekend and not qualifying well, we were really good in the race. We had worked our way pretty far forward and felt pretty good about how we were looking for the rest of the race. Then Jakes got in the the back of us and knocked the bumper pod off. We had to go to our spare wing which was set at higher level of downforce which was hurting our pace. Ultimately, we had a mechanical issue. If you look at our results from 2015 on the ovals with the No. 20 car, it looks so bad. We were definitely better than what we showed, it was just one of those years where we couldn’t catch a break. Happy for Josef to finish second, but more than anything, sending prayers our for Justin (Wilson) and his family.”
